    Windows Updates not happy?

    Yesterday I repaired my installation of windows because I had some icons not showing up, WMP, IE, Wordpad and my Windows updates weren't working. I tried an sfc /scannow but that didn't do any good, so I did a repair.

    After the repair all was hunky dory. I got the first windows update (the v3.1 installer) installed but ever since that update, I can DOWNLOAD updates but I can't install them. They all fail. I tried it both via Automatic updates and through the windows update site...same results.

    I am at a complete loss as to where to even start. Let me know what you want/need to proceed and I shall provide it.

    Do you have the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) started?
    you need this for automatic updates or express install to work;
    1. Click Start, and then click Run.
    2. Type services.msc and then click OK.
    3. In the list of services, right-click the service name, and then click Properties.
    4. In the Startup type list, select Automatic.
    5. Verify that the service status is started.

    Yup. BITS is started. Still no go on the updates.

    You doing automatic or choosing Custom updates? You might choose Custom, and just do a couple at a time.

    TL - That command did not produce an error.

    Judy - I've tried it with automatic, custom, from the website...They are still failing.

    Do you get an error? If so, what is the wording of the error, including any numbers in there.
    Also check your Event Log to see if anything is noted there.

    Cannot Install Updates

    That was my first thought....no errors come up, they just fail...and nothing in event viewer either...I thought that was slightly odd.

    I just checked again, and the only thing in event viewer about updates, are messages stating that I have downloaded updates that need to be installed.

    Try logging in as the actual admin account or create a brand new one with the admin privileges to see if it helps.

    Also if you have any AV/Spyware scanners including firewall, etc. i would kill/disable them to take that possibility out.

    Also, if System Restore is running, stop it and then disable it to see if the System Restore was failing to create a check-point and hosing the installation.
