    Rats! Do you have the original XP disk? If you do try the following, try Method 1 first, if it doesn't work then try Method 2
    Method 1: Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.x Repair for Windows XP

    * From the Start menu, select Run.
    * In the Open field, type sfc /scannow (Note: There is a space between sfc and /scannow)
    * Select the OK button.
    * Follow the prompts throughout the System File Checker process.
    * Reboot the computer when System File Checker completes.

    Method 2: Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.x Repair for Windows XP

    * From the Start menu, select Search, select All Files and Folders.
    * Select More Advanced Options and place a checkmark beside Search Hidden Files and Folders option.
    * Ensure that Search System Folders and Search Subfolders are also checked.
    * In the All or Part of the File Name box, type ie.inf
    * In the Look In drop-down menu, select C: or the letter of the hard drive that contains the Windows folder.
    * Click the Search button.
    * In the search results pane, find the ie.inf file located in Windows\Inf folder.
    * Right click the ie.inf file and click Install on the context menu.
    * Reboot the computer

    If you DON'T have the disk then try this;

    click on start>run>type in cmd>enter
    then type in the following(one at a time)

    regsvr32 shdocvw.dll
    regsvr32 shell32.dll
    regsvr32 oleaut32.dll
    regsvr32 actxprxy.dll
    regsvr32 mshtml.dll
    regsvr32 urlmon.dll

    I have spent the evening tearing up my residence looking for that disk. If I have it or ever had it, I certainly don't know where it is now. I could not find it.

    I typed in the six entries as you instructed. After each entry there was a note saying it had succeeded. I'm going to take that as a good sign.

    It didn't work. It told me that it was downloaded. After it rebooted, I got the same message when I clicked on IE as before. I tried to download it again, but it errored saying a new version of IE had been detected on this machine.

    Have you done a search on the machine for iexplore.exe? Start, Search, Files and Folders...search on the hard drive.
    Do you have ANY disks that came with the computer?
    We have run into what I was afraid we were going to run into on a totally non-updated and extremely infected machine...that is the probably damage of much needed files.
    But as it stands now, without these disks you couldn't even do a reformat if you wanted because you need those disks.
    Give me all the info on the computer...make, model etc. And keep looking for those disks. You DO need them

    The computer is a Compaq Presario SR1020NX.

    There is a IExpore.exe in C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download...... It says the date modified was 08/04/04.

    If I can't find the disks, how expensive does this get?
