    Video and Sound Issues

Recently I reformatted my computer because the sound no longer worked, and the video playback would freeze every few seconds during movies. After I reformatted the computer began running properly again but now the same issues are coming back. I've downloaded the most recent driver for my Realtek AC97 (4.0) and now it says that the device cannot start. It won't start even if I uninstall and reinstall it or anything so I'm looking for advice.

Honestly, other than too many unnecessary programs running and starting automatically at start up I don't see anything which would affect the audio. Are you absolutely certain you have the latest drivers? It could also be a failed audio card which would mean it would need to be replaced.

Well that could be it, but it's strange because it works every once in awhile, it seems really moody or something. Would I be able to install a sound card by myself or would I have to get it worked on?

The fact that it works intermittently may really be very telling, especially since you have a new driver and the problem still happens. It possibly is a signal that it IS on it's "last legs". They are not hard to replace if you are secure enough to "poke around" inside the computer. Basically you just unplug the old and plug in the new.
Here is a page showing how to do it, may not look exactly like your computer but it is pretty much the same process on most.

    Whoops! Is this a laptop?

My only concern is that I have a laptop, and they seem harder to work on. All I've ever done to it is add 512 RAM, but I'm pretty sure if it's relatively easy I can do it. Do I have to buy a specialized sound card, or are they the same for all computers?

Looks like we overlapped each other! Give me exact model of the computer and let me do some checking.

It's a Toshiba Satellite A75. It might be more detailed than that, if you need more details I can search a little more but I'm in a slight hurry at the moment...

Ok I'm 90% sure it's a Toshiba Satellite A75-S209. I've included a screen shot of my "System Information" in case that includes anything else helpful. What other details could you use?
