I feel that unless the registry holds a specific link to malware, which of course some do, orphans and duplicates are generally harmless and will not be really slowing the performance of your system. If registry cleaning *really* able to improve performance, the developers of these utilities would support their marketing claims with some form of definite evidence (performance prior to cleaning -vs- performance post cleaning). But have you ever seen such proof? No, and that's because registry cleaning does *not* improve perforance. Think about it ... programs such as SpywareBlaster dump 1000's of entries into the registry without causing any performance reduction. Plus today registrys hold a lot more information than years ago (bigger hard disk=more programs/more data=more registry entries) and generally systems today are much faster than those of years gone by. Most of the time I believe that the regular using of automated registry cleaners is like doing surgery every time you have a stomach ache...not something one would even consider.
While occasionally automated registry cleaners can be used the operative word is Occasionally...not daily and certainly not without examining and researching FIRST the items which are suggested for removal.

yeah, but the registry is a scam to keep record of everything you do on your computer... you need to be able to clean it, or risk having sensative information stolen in the event of a security/privacy breach....

Registry cleaning and optimization is a hit or miss or perhaps a better analogy would be to call it a double-edged sword, one could indeed improve their system's performance or make it worse (and in some cases make their system crap out big time).
Registry is a blueprint of every executable or executable related function/file in Windows but it could also hold data if you made it. Unlike Windows 2K's registry, XP's registry is not cap'ed and it is also much more optimized but each installed (registered) application or action will bloat the registry and since all actions are controlled through the registry, the system will indeed take a performance hit if the registry got too big, regardless of all entries being legit or some being invalid but getting rid of the invalid ones will certainly make the regitry leaner which would help system function much faster since the registry scans would consume less time. Not to mention that invalid entries could also cause problems, errors, etc.

I always test the registry cleaners on my dummy systems a few times and then start using them on my actual systems and I always create a registry backup using ERUNT even if the registry cleaner itself creates back ups or not.
So far, my favorite and more stable registry cleaner I have seen is RegScrubXP. RegSeeker is great too but in a few instance, it created instability and even application errors so you really have to know what you are doing and be prepared for improvement as well as problems when using this type of program.

~TL I was going to note those in my post as I have also used both, on RARE occasions...didn't you used to have a link to both on here somewhere? I couldn't find them here and that is why I decided against noting those.
