But did you receive OTHER disks? What brand and model of computer is this? How long have you had it? Where did you purchase it?

It's an HP I have only had since January this year. But It didn't come with any discs. I got it at best buy.

You should have received disks with it. You should contact Best Buy and ask them why you did not. You also should contact HP, it should definitely be under warranty. They should provide you with disks and frankly at this point, that is really what you need.

does this mean I'm going to lose all my programs & files??? I'm very confused now? They gave me some papers to send out for Vista but I didn't want to upgrade so I never sent them in and I'm sure it's too late now to send that in. Do they ever give out windows discs with new comps anymore?

Rarely - and this is a big bone of contention for a lot of people.

These days the big manufacturers expect you to burn your own copy to DVD (it is usually on a separate partition).
Real PITA + you need your product key for updates and reinstalls, etc..., etc...
Your retailer should've given some instructions on how to do this at point of purchase...

The crap that passes for "customer service" these days....

so what does this mean for me? I have to go best buy hassle them to get a real windows program and then what? How can I save all my programs and files?? It was bought on 1/11/07 thats less than a year. I am doomed for customer service hell and talking to machines on phones aren't I? I still don't know what happened! There isn't a registry thing I could fix? There is an occasional error that reads "could not find C/Document\HP_ADM~1\LOCALS~1\TEMP\IE7-WINDOWSXP-X86-env.EXE" Is there a fix for this?? Thanks for your help.

I am not sure - I have not had time to read this entire thread. Just wanted to answer your specific question.

You should have a partition on your hard drive with your OS on it. Also, somewhere in your documentation/owners manual I imagine there are instructions for making your own copy of Windows.

You may indeed have to haggle with Best Buy or Microsoft (both unenviable tasks) and if and when you do reinstall windows, you WILL LOSE all important data on your machine.
Worst case scenario, though, would be to just back up on DVD ALL of the stuff you want to save (don't worry about backing up any malware along with it at this point) and then go back to where you bought your machine and raise a ruckus until they reinstall your OS for free. Then, put your important data back on compy.

-- Because I have not had time to read back over everything, not sure if Judy had you try sfc and then download and reinstall IE6?

    Best luck

I think I may have to start saving all my files to DVD and that start from scratch... Isn't there a feature during startup that reverts the comp back to it's original state. She did mention the sfc thing and thats when my computer asked me for the disks! Ugh!

To revert back you have to have disks.
Back everything up you wish to save onto cdr's or dvd's. Don't worry about any programs you have downloaded, you will be able to download them again. If there are mails or documents you need to save then back those up also. If there is an online service you can use to back these up then that might be a good idea also. I really wish I could do more for you but without the disks to work with I hesitate to advise anymore.
What is the model of the computer?
