Its an HP Pavilion a1646x. Once I save what I need to save, what do I do next?? I know a computer guy am I better off having him nuke it and rebuild it or try and go through buest buy or HP? Somehow I either got a bug or deleted a file? It still works but clearly from my HJT log I have too much un-needed crap on here! It may be best to start over at this point.

It should also give you opportunity to read from the hard drive if a copy of OS is on separate partition.

That may be a bit drastic at this point - Things could be repaired.
Plus, unneeded startups can be controlled, so no big worry there.

Once you save what you need to save, you can get your computer guy friend to help you reinstall Windows (if it comes to that).
What you need to worry about first is getting a legitimate copy of Windows either from Best Buy, microsoft, or or your compy (if there). Frankly, if the store you bought your machine from did not give you a disk, I would go back and demand that they do so - when you bought your machine, you PAID for a copy of windows that is licensed to you.
Worst case, if you still have your Windows OS Key, you can call Microsoft and, if your key is valid, they can probably set you up with a new copy at a modest cost.

-- I've been so busy that I have not looked a the body of this thread yet, so my advice may be a bit suspect. Perhaps TL can weigh in on whether things are beyond repair.

Because it is a new computer...less than a year old...the warranty should still be good, I would contact HP rather than take it to a "computer guy". I am not saying he isn't good, I am saying you need to comply with everything your warranty requires in order to make it work for you and it will.

    According to what I find on the HP website your warranty includes;

Hardware parts and labor>>>>>One Year from date of purchase
Technical telephone assistance>>>>One Year from date of purchase
Recovery CD's>>>>One Year (recommend use of CD Creator to make CD set) HP TechChatline probably could walk you through this process.
So you have approx 5 months remaining on the warranty, this is part of what you paid for, you should use it Dave.
Or call them on the telephone.
800-474-6836 which is tech support open 24/7.

I think THIS is the route you need to go. I have used both their telephone and chat support on several occasions since I have two HP printers...I can honestly say I have had good luck with both

    Judy,

Thanks so much for all your time and help, I'll call HP and see what I can do. There are some programs I'll have to re-install but I obviously added too much stuff and am having problems now because of it. I'll talk to my comp guy and get his thoughts and if he thinks I need a new windows I am guessing HP should at least verify I have a legit copy. I still wish I knew what happened in the first place! If there is ever any music you need send me a PM I deal in records for a living and you've been so helpful I'll try and track down any music if you want, of course I am talking about records not mp3s etc though I could transfer the LP to CDR etc.

Essentially, I NEED a WINDOWS DISC To save my suff at this point? That's what I'm getting? Correct? Thanks.

Typically your Windows product key can be found on a sticker on the installation CD case (which of course you don't have) or on a certificate of authenticity card. You can also find the product key on a small Microsoft sticker on the outside of your computers case.
For the moment the only thing you need to "save your stuff" is a blank cdr or dvd and a cdr/dvd burning program. Just burn all you want to save to a disk.
Yes, to repair you will or do need a Windows Disk. HP should be able to explain to you either how to obtain one OR how to copy one from the other partition that PP spoke about in his post.
Don't give up, CALL or Chat with HP. I am certain they will be able to help you. I think there is probably a good chance you can repair this and not have to totally reformat. But wait until you get the advice from HP. Go with them FIRST. They will give you the best options AND will be able to keep your warranty valid. Don't do anything drastic which could void the warranty. You really should try that chatline first, they may be able to walk you through what you need to do right away. They are good, at least I have had very good luck with them. If they feel you need to actually speak with a tech they will give you any additional number you will need.
Don't forget, we are here if you need us.
