HijackThis Log IE 7.0 won't DL Norton Not Running???? RESTARTS Slow!

I'm not sure what the heck happened but I can't run Internet Explorer at all! I have tried to DL the 7.0 and it asks me to restart my computer. Problem is that my restart is VERY slow and I usually have to end up choosing to START IN LAST WORKING CONFIGURATION MODE??? My Norton AV 2007 and NSW will not update either. Even when I use the removal tool it says restart and and when I do, same as IE nothing has changed and Norton says Restart again etc... ? I am very confused? When I'm online everything seems ok but I am not protected and have no idea how or what changed? I need some Pro help! Here's today's log:

First of all I do not see a firewall running unless you are using the built in Windows Firewall.

I don't really see anything "bad" in your HJT log but:

I see multiple anti-malware programs running(turn these off for now)
    a-squared Anti-Malware
    Spyware Doctor
    SUPERAntiSpyware
    Windows Defender
My philosophy is "less is more". Having too many running can cause sometimes as much trouble as not enough.

You also are showing multiple entries in O23 Services section of HJT(Services are programs that are loaded automatically by Windows on startup) for AVG Anti-virus. Now granted, these say (file missing) which mean the program probably has been removed at some time but not correctly since these entries remain.
I don't know how you uninstalled it but you should go to Start, Search, Files and Folders and look for AVG. Delete any that you find.

    restart is VERY slow
    You have entirely too many programs which are loading automatically at start up, many of them unnecessary for auto-start and can easily be run manually;
    ehTray
    RoxioDragToDisc
    RoxioAudioCentral
    RealPlayer Update
    WinampAgent
    QuickTime Task
    HP Software Update
Two instances of the Norton Internet Security configuration wizard which was Introduced with Norton Anti-Virus 2002, this is a real resource hog. Many NAV users will find they can live without loading it at all. Both of these show
    Windows Messenger.
    Google Toolbar Notifier
    Adobe Gamma Loader
    Adobe Reader Speed Launch

Your log does show IE version 7 on the computer. Have you attempted to roll back to version 6 by going to Add/Remove and uninstalling IE7? This should roll you back to IE6.
See if that makes a difference

I am going to recommend that you download Mike Lin's StartUpControl Panel. A free, very easy to use program which helps you control the programs you want to run at start up. Once you have downloaded and installed it you will find in in the Control Panel. Just open the program and remove the checkmarks from the programs you wish to Stop from loading automatically at start up.

Your Java is way out of date. The current release is Version 6 Update 2 and you are still running version 1.5.0_06 which is even out of date for that version which went up to 1.5.0_11 before the newest version release last winter.
You need to go into Add/Remove and uninstall all of the old java programs listed there.
Then go to SunJava Downloads and download and install the newest version. I recommend using the OFFLINE installation. Meaning you download and save, then go offline and install. Go back online and verify the installation.

Do you have your original disk for your Norton Program? If so, you might try totally uninstalling Norton and then reinstalling. There may be corruption in the program on the computer now.

Once you have done all of the above then just to be certain I would like you to go to this link READ ME Before Posting A Request For Assistance!
Follow ALL of the steps there, including the proper location of HiJackThis, and then post back with all the logs requested in that link. Be absolutely certain that you turn off those extra anti-spy programs until I give the "go ahead" after going through all the new logs.

Ok, I was unable to uninstall IE7 an error came up reading "The file 'iexplore.exe.000' on Windows NT Service Park Uninstall directory is needed - Copy Files From C:\\WINDOWS\ie7 - then there is an empty folder called Spuninst.

I was able to install Java.

I ran AVG in Safe Mode and came up with only a Boot Error? No threats? I added hijack this to a program file folder and changed the name and here is the latest HijackThis Log.

You still have WAY TOO many programs running in the background and running at start up.
What exactly was the boot error?
Again I say, cut down on all the auto starts. Every unnecessary program running on auto start can and probably does slow down your boot process. You also have way too many anti-malware programs running all the time in the background. These too can cause program update and download problems.

Did you run Kaspersky online and save the log? That is one I need to see. Where is that AVG log?
It should NOT be running in the background if you followed instructions in the link I gave you.

I am new to this and wasn't sure where to find the log to save in AVG. I also couldn't find the ATF cleaner? I'll print out the instructions and try it again. Please forgive my noobness on this. I tried again to reinstall windows IE7 and nothing... After start up I received this message - "could not find C/Document\HP_ADM~1\LOCALS~1\TEMP\IE7-WINDOWSXP-X86-env.EXE" I have a feeling something changed my registry? I'll print the instructions out and try again and uninstall some malware stuff. Thanks for your quick responses.

The ATF-Cleaner program should be downloaded to your desktop. It will look like my attachment.
I would advise against attempting to download IE7 anymore. There is obviously something wrong with either your ability to download it OR the Internet Explorer all ready on the computer. Downloading a new version on top of a damaged old one probably won't work. For now, skip it.

Read the link again and it does tell you how and where to save the AVG log and also the Kaspersky log. Both should be saved to the desktop for easy locating.
The file which could not be found was supposedly located in a Temp file. You might try doing a search for IE7-WINDOWSXP-X86-env.EXE on the C drive in general using Start, Search, Files and Folders. If you keep downloading it then it should be there someplace. Since you have downloaded this numerous times do you ever get a warning that the file is all ready on the computer and do you want to replace it? If not then maybe the problem lies with something stopping the downloads themselves.
Do as you said, print out the instructions, take them one at a time from the top...thought you had finished awfully quickly, and when you have completed them all then post back with the new logs.
Do at least the online Kaspersky for sure, and Panda if you can. Kaspersky WILL NOT fix anything but will generate a log we can take a look at.
Hey, we ALL were "noobies" at one time...the key is take it nice and easy and have patience.

Ok.... I was unable to download Kapersky but I did the other steps and the only thing that came up again in AVG was a Boot Error in C but AVG didn't allow me any more info or a fix? I was also unable to figure out a way to save any logs from Windows Defender or AVG. I'm at a loss? Something is keeping windows from updating & IE7 from loading and I found the missing IE7 file but it simply starts the download process again which leads to the restart option. I do only have the FREE version of AVG, I'm not sure if that makes a difference. Here is the new hijack log. I tried as best as I could to take it slow and follow the directions. The only odd program I saw was called OTTO an application? Couldn't find any info so decided to leave it there... Is it simply too many cooks in the kitchen? Too many programs running? Here's the last hijack log:

I have tried to DL the 7.0 and it asks me to restart my computer. Problem is that my restart is VERY slow and I usually have to end up choosing to START IN LAST WORKING CONFIGURATION MODE???

Something is keeping windows from updating & IE7 from loading and I found the missing IE7 file but it simply starts the download process again which leads to the restart option.
Ok, I still don't see much in your HJT log EXCEPT a LOT of items running in the background.

IE7 absolutely MUST restart the computer in order to complete the installation. You have been stopping that by choosing START IN LAST WORKING CONFIGURATION MODE which, in essence, is telling the computer to NOT complete the installation but go back to IE6 so, I think anyway, this may be why the IE7 is not installing. When completing an installation the start up will be slow because the final steps are being completed. BUT if IE6 was not working prior to the attempt to update to IE7 then the problem lies with Internet Explorer itself. You have not said if this is the case. IF this is the case, that IE6 has not been working, then this would be one reason you cannot update Windows. It needs Internet Explorer for updates, you cannot use another browser. Can you tell me please if it was "broken" BEFORE you tried to install IE7?
You are using AOL, which version of AOL are you using? AOL I believe comes with IE6 embedded in it, I did find some links in my search for an answer where some AOL users DID have a problem updating to IE7 because they were using the IE6 which came with their AOL program. I don't know if this applies to you or not.

When you are attempting the update to IE7 do you follow these instructions below?

1.Double-click the Windows Internet Explorer installation program. If you are prompted, click Run.
2.On the Welcome to Windows Internet Explorer 7 page of the installation program, click Next.
3.Review the license agreement, and then click I Accept.

If you do not accept the terms of the license agreement, we recommend that you do not click I Accept. (It doesn't say so but I believe that if you don't accept the terms then the installation cannot take place)

4.Click Validate to validate the Windows installation.

(Now, #5 is a key also to what might be your problem. If you are NOT doing what is noted in BOLD in #5 then this might be why the installation fails too. This was from a Microsoft page for persons having a problem installing IE7 and is the recommended work around)

5.On the Get the latest updates page of the installation program, click to clear the Install the latest updates for Internet Explorer and the Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool (recommended) check box, and then click Next.
6.When the installation program finishes, click Restart Now (Recommended) to restart the computer.

Installation, including the restart, of IE7 on dial-up can take upwards of 30 minutes OR more.

My Norton AV 2007 and NSW will not update either. Even when I use the removal tool it says restart and and when I do, same as IE nothing has changed and Norton says Restart again etc... ?
I use Norton Anti-virus and most of the time it will just update but on occasion it will require a restart and then that restart is slow because it is updating files, updating the registry, etc. I cannot say for sure this is the reason you had this problem with the Norton updates it could be that the program itself had become corrupt and therefore it couldn't update.

The only odd program I saw was called OTTO an application?
You don't say WHERE you saw this odd program.
The only program I could find called OTTO is a web based mp3 database and jukebox which is used to organize a large number of music albums. If you don't use this or know what this is uninstall it.

To see if you can find the Boot Error noted in the AVG scan you might try going to Control Panel, Administrative tools and checking Event Viewer, Applications and also System. See what errors are noted there. Double click on the error and it should tell you what caused the errors.
I do only have the FREE version of AVG, I'm not sure if that makes a difference.
That wouldn't make any difference with any of what you are experiencing. It is a perfectly good program. Just remember to update it.
You do still have multiple anti-spy programs running too. You don't need that many.

Ok, I never really use IE so I can't say for sure if it was broken. This only started happening in the last few days where windows won't update. I end up starting in Last good Configuration because otherwise the computer just keeps restarting forever... I have a feeling aol could be behind this maybe I should uninstall aol and re-install IE7 after? Could that be? I need to learn how to turn off the programs running that I don't use or need. Thanks for all your help I'll keep trying. I Use DSL so downloads are quick but something is funky!

Did you download Mike Lin's program? It will help stop all the unnecessary starts.
Let me go back through everything and see what I can come up with ok?
