    Well dr...you may very well have hit the nail on the head with this comment you made earlier...
    I have a feeling aol could be behind this maybe I should uninstall aol and re-install IE7 after? Could that be?
    Now I have to be totally honest here, I am not a fan of AOL. I firmly believe it adds a lot of unnecessary "junk" that is totally unnecessary and quite often done in a "sneaky" way with an auto update and frankly I am elated when I can convince somebody to remove AOL....I was surprised when you told me that you are using dsl because several of the entries in your Running Processes section of your HJT logs are for AOL Dial-up...which you shouldn't need at all if you are using dsl because of course dsl isn't dial up it is "always on". Your logs also show AOL Anti-spyware...are you certain that the only AOL security program you are using or are you using others?

    The reason Windows won't update is because it DOES need Internet Explorer. You cannot use another browser when you go to the Windows update page it has to be Internet Explorer. Now you say you rarely use Internet Explorer, I know you use Firefox since I have seen it in your logs, which I think is a super browser and have used it exclusively for well over two years, except for Windows Updates, which I do manually not automatically, and then I of course use Internet Explorer.

    If you are willing to do so and feel comfortable accessing the internet just using your dsl connection, which you should be able to do with Firefox, then I think you should uninstall ALL AOL related files using the instructions given on the link and THEN doing a file search for all remaining AOL and manually delete all that you find, and you WILL find some as it is difficult to remove all with just a simple uninstall. (once you have repaired Internet Explorer of course you can reinstall AOL, though personally I hope that you don't You will be amazed at how much space you regain but of course that is YOUR choice)

    Then see if you can use Internet Explorer. If you cannot then you would need to repair Internet Explorer using the steps outlined here;
    How to reinstall or repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows XP

    Could I then reinstall AOL after IE7 works? Or will I be back in this same mess? I use aol cause I have had the same email address for an ebay business for like 9 years and would hate to change it now. Would an AOL forced update fix this IE7 business? I use firefox for surfing but aol for the email etc.

    Choice is yours really. Key thing is that you will have to find a way to get IE repaired or not get Windows Updates.

    keeping an email address

    If I am not mistaken you can set up multiple email addresses in Outlook Express.And as long as you have the correct settings for your ingoing and outgoing mail,you should be able to access that email address without installing AOL's software.As for the correct setting for your POP and SMTP,I have no idea what those would be,but there will surely be someone who could provide that information.

    Phoenix, yes you can set up any number of addresses in one Outlook Express but I believe that "the dr" is a paid subscriber to aol so this is why he is questioning the reinstall of the aol software. Now aol DOES offer a free mail though I don't know for sure if he could keep his old address using the free mail, which I believe is webmail though I know you can, "they" claim, set up OE to get your aol mail..though it isn't easy because I have tried it. It can be a pain in the...it isn't POP mail so the settings are slightly different. Tried this with two I know who insist on using aol, one got it to work and the other never did. Of course aol makes everything so much easier....

    I tried to post again after I saw the Blank post and the forum said I posted the same post twice? I have an IE log. Would that help anyone or uh me!? I updated AOL and tried to re-start but I just ended up starting in last configuration mode again just so i could use my computer. I am wondering now if this isn't a strange administrator issue. I am the only one who uses my comp but I do recall seeing two users when working in safe mode? Should I nuke the other user? Should I try and post the IE log again? Something is blocking IE...
