    DirectX End-User Redistributable 9.0c (June 2007)

Microsoft DirectX is a group of technologies designed to make Windows-based computers an ideal platform for running and displaying applications rich in multimedia elements such as full-color graphics, video, 3D animation, and rich audio. DirectX 9.0 includes security and performance updates, along with many new features across all technologies, which can be accessed by applications using the DirectX 9.0 APIs.

get it, archive it and save it so you can use your old favorite games on windows 9x/xp/2k later on, cause more than likely, the OS, your favorite games and DX6-9 will all be vaporware and the fan sites that like to host their favorite versions/mods etc... might be long gone.

Most (old) games that require DirectX 6.x or 7.x might work with DirectX version 8.x by applying a patch for that specific game/app however DirectX 9.x support for most of those older games unfotunately not available anyhow.

1 more reason for me to hate M$ is the fact that they are not making DirectX 10 update for Windows XP even though they could just to be able to sell more copies of Astala Vista!

correct, no dx9 support, b or c even for some of the older games.. That is why you need the previous versions, dx6-7-8 redistributables as well.. I tried to get all of them and I have several versions of redistributables downloaded from MS when they had that "right in the front" look at me easy to find.. now everything is burried under the promotions for dx10 and vista and if you pick the wrong link, you have to start digging all over again.. It's criminal to make things that work unavailable to force unwanted and un-necesarry upgrades just so they can get money, kinda like if you purposely sabatoged an opperating system to force someone to upgrade, or purposely disabled someones internet in order for the guy down the street that doesn't download as many game demos to have "faster throughput"..

The link in the post is to the web download runtime; here is the link to the redistributable

Also most older games did come with the required version of DirectX available right on the Game CD.

TRUE! My Interstate 76 nitro pack and gold upgrade has 3dnow, mmx, 3dfx and rendition verite support built in as well , But Duke 3d worked best in DOS! using custom vb drivers for the ati rage pc to tv, pumping out 188 to 300 fps and ultra liquid smooth all on an MMX pentium LOL! with Vquake +3dnow coming in at a close second to duke 3d. Then doom 3d, then UT, UT championship, UT 2k4 editors choice with cbp, and my all time favorite, return to castle wolfenstein.. The only game I have issues with doesn't like to work with DX "anyversion" "TDR2000" but I suppose a 3dfx card in a Mac would fix that right up. now if game makers could get on the band waggon and have native support in game for 8800gts640 sli and radeon, like the old days with game patches for videocards then we'd be set!
