    One more question since I like being a nit picker.
    Wouldn't a boot-time scan with Avast essentially be as good as safe mode scan?

    Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
    • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
    • When VundoFix re-opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
    • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
    • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
    • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
    • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
    Once you have run this tool then reboot. Run a new HJT scan and post the new log.
    One more question since I like being a nit picker.

    Not necessarily. There can be some nasty things that could have booted before the scan in a normal boot that couldn't be removed because they would all ready be running with that boot scan possibly. But it certainly wouldn't hurt your computer to configure Avast to do that...but it is the AVG Anti-spy we wanted run in SAFE MODE not your anti-virus program, though sometimes, and with some infections a SAFE BOOT scan with the anti-virus program IS called for.
    AVG looks for and finds things that the anti-virus programs are not set up to remove...many trojans for example.
    Even though the free full trial of the AVG has expired really all you lose is the background guard. The scanning and removal capabilities of AVG-Anti-spy remains intact and very usable AND updatable(is that a word?) with the free version.

    Vundo had some problems with one of the DLL's but removed it on reboot.

    Mike,
    Do you know what this program is, I can find no info whatsoever.
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Wsro] "C:\PROGRA~1\PPPATC~1\tracert.exe" -vt yazb
    It should be located in your C:\Programs folder

    Also Mike, do you or have you used AOL?

    tracert is a weird one

    Searching my computer only finds Tracert in C:\WINDOWS\system32 and C:\WINDOWS\dllcache and C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 and they are all owned by Microsoft and all created in 2003. I do however have a folder located in Program Files called AppPatch which would somewhat match the folder name HJT spat out, but that folder is showing as empty. This is a strange one. It seems to be running good now, tracert is not showing up in processes and cpu usage is hovering around 5% like it should be.

    I'm probably about due for a reinstall since I've been running the same install of XP for at least 2 yrs now but I would like to do a full clean install (registry, boot records and all) and I'm not sure how to format/reinstall on XP (without damaging other partitions) it's probably the same as on win98 I'll just have to dig up some instructions.

    I have had AOL on here in the past, but now I only have AOL messenger and go to AOL webmail on occasion.

    *Microsofts explanation of Tracert http://www.microsoft.com/resources/d....mspx?mfr=true Looks like Spanish to me, I can pick out most of the words.... sounds like ping to me.

    Determines the path taken to a destination by sending Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) Echo Request messages to the destination with incrementally increasing Time to Live (TTL) field values. The path displayed is the list of near-side router interfaces of the routers in the path between a source host and a destination. The near-side interface is the interface of the router that is closest to the sending host in the path. Used without parameters, tracert displays help.

    Just curious about this one... svchost shows up in task manager>processes a total of 6 times, 3 belonging to SYSTEM one of which using 22mb ram, 2 belong to NETWORK SERVICE and 1 to LOCAL SERVICE. Is this somewhat normal?

    Yes, this is normal, right now I have 5 on my machine. To quote Microsoft;
    At startup, Svchost.exe checks the services part of the registry to construct a list of services that it must load. Multiple instances of Svchost.exe can run at the same time. Each Svchost.exe session can contain a grouping of services. Therefore, separate services can run, depending on how and where Svchost.exe is started. This grouping of services permits better control and easier debugging.
    Now since you ran the Vundo Fix there are some fixes you should do with HJT to clean things up;
    Run HJT again and put checkmarks next to the following entries;
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {759ED5CB-2CFC-4134-9142-3DD729AC1FC9} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtuts.dll (file missing)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {D9CF9E72-1E65-4EC1-B57A-19BE12030BF5} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\mljkijg.dll (file missing)
    Once you have placed those checkmarks then click the FIX button.
    Exit HJT.
    Reboot and run one more HJT scan and save the log and post it here.

    You do have some unnecessary items running in start up which you could clean out to speed things up too. I will be happy to give you a list if you like. I suggest using Mike Lin's Start Up Control Panel

    Thanks for your help with this, I would love any suggestions as to what I should disable in startup... I downloaded the manager that you suggested. I know I don't need qttask and eraser, but not too sure what else is not needed... Smax is used for my sound I'm pretty sure.

    Ok, these are all the auto-starts (and an explanation as to what they are) that are either User Choice or Not Required that you can disable from auto start by removing the checkmark next to it in Mike Lin's program;
    SoundMAXPnP- SoundMax integrated sound. Required if you have custom settings for your sound, such as effects and environments

    SoundMAX- System Tray icon for SoundMax integrated sound. Sound properties can be accessed through the Start Menu or Control Panel

    ATICCC-ATI's CATALYST™ CONTROL CENTER. Required if you want to change graphics settings on a regular basis but you must have internet access and Microsoft's .NET framework installed

    SunJavaUpdateSched- Checks with Sun's Java updates site to see if newer Java versions are available. Visit Sun's Java page or just run the Java Plug-In Control Panel. Run it manually.

    HP Software Update-HP software updates. If a shortcut doesn't exist, create your own and run it manually

    QuickTime Task- System Tray access to Apple's "Quick Time" viewer from version 5 onwards (this one will put itself back in auto start each time you use it so you have to remember to check Mike Lin's program after each use.

    Eraser-
    Eraser allows for complete removal of data from your hard drive

    Adobe Gamma Loader- Adjusts monitor colours across all programs, including Photoshop. I use Photoshop and DO have this disabled and have never had a problem.

    HP Digital Imaging Monitor-Can be launched manually.

    HP Photosmart Premier Fast Start-I am not certain about this one, you might disable and see. I could find no info one way or another.

    The reason I like and recommend this Mike Lin's Start Up Control Panel is, if you disable something and then find you DO want it to auto start all you do is go back in and put a checkmark next to it to tell it to go ahead and start when the computer starts.
    Play around with it and see what you think.

    Red face Thank You

    Thank You so much for all your help Judy. I will disable most of those entries, I wasn't sure if the catalyst or soundmax would mess anything up... I know I could always just experiment (I follow the...if it ain't broke...philosophy) Enjoy your Memorial Day weekend.

    ~Mike~
