A young man tried to elope with a princess, but the king found out and offered him a sporting chance. The king would put two slips of paper in a box, one marked 'DEATH', the other marked 'PRINCESS.' To decide his fate, the young man was to be blindfolded and choose one paper. The young man knew the king would mark both papers 'DEATH', but he managed to win the princess despite this. HOW did he do it?

He takes one of the papers and eats it. Since the one that is left will say 'DEATH' then the one that he ate had to read 'PRINCESS'.

    What Karl said!
(I have seen this before but the trivial details were a bit different).

If the King was as smart as he was mean, he would have poisoned both papers and let the guy know ahead then let him pick...

ANSWER (Congrats acoustikarl and TL): He picked one paper, and ate it. The king wouldn't admit to cheating so it leads that he picked the paper that said Princess.
