    Logging in as Administrator

Thanks for your previous assistance. I am still trying to follow the "Read Before Posting A Request For Asistance" instructions, but I have encountered a problem.

I attempted to run the online virus scan through the Kaspersky Online Virus scan website, but I cannot download the scanner & definitions. The acceptance window at the website tells me that I must be logged in as an administrator to download the scanner, but I do not know how to do that.

I thought that as the only operator of my computer, I was already an administrator. How do I log on as an administrator so I can move forward with the instructions?

Once again, thanks for your assistance.

Never mind, I found the answer

I posted this in haste. I looked up the question in my Windows XP Bible and looked at my account in control panel and saw that I am already the administrator of my computer.

The problem must be at the Kaspersky website. It keeps leading me around in circles. Based on my experience with it, I would not recommend it to someone having computer problems, as I could not make any headway. I will try one of the other online virus scans listed in the instructions.

    Thanks again,

    Wayne

Wayne, often times one site or the other has problems, don't worry about the Kaspersky scan, just procede as you have stated, to one of the other online scanners listed. If you cannot do those either just continue on with the other steps and then when you make your post with the various logs requested just note there that you weren't able to complete one or more of the scans.

Remember, when you do post your logs, etc., be sure to give us an exact description of the problems you are having and also give us at least basic info about your computer...hard drive size, how much space is remaining, how much RAM is installed. When did your problems begin?

    Current problems

My problems began about 3 weeks ago. I suspect it has something to do with the new version of McAffee security system I downloaded and installed, but I cannot prove it. Yet.

I experience a TREMENDOUS slowdown when online and my CPU usage jumps to 100% and stays there as soon as I get online.

I think maybe the new McAffee security system is designed for Vista, and as I am running Windows XP, it is causing problems for me. I hope this isn't the case, but I think it might be.

Recent anti-virus and anti-spyware scans, using McAffee and AdAware have found nothing except tracking cookies. Spybot found two other things, which I don't know what they are, so I was hesitant to quarantine them. I will post more detailed info later.

I'll finish the initial cleaning process and then report back, detailing as much as I can. Thanks for the advice.

    Latest Update

After nearly 4 HOURS, Panda ActiveScan is JUST NOW beginning it's scan of my computer. I am beside myself, but I will remain calm. At least I'm finally making some kind of progress.

Are you on AOL or is this just McAfee Security System? Are you on dial-up?

I need to know what these are/were.

Wayne if you continue to have problems with online scans just move onto the other steps and give us the scan logs. We can go from there. Also, remember with scans like Spybot if you quarantine something and it is incorrect you can always restore from the quarantine. That is the whole idea with the quarantine...it will stop something from working, especially if it is bad but it won't remove something totally from the computer until you empty that quarantine.
