Oh, I also remember I'm not supposed to block Startup programs directly from MSConfig? Where can I go to stop some things that I don't want to have start at bootup if not MSConfig?

With your help, I now know... GPower is a statistical program to calculate - surprise - the "power" of a given inference test.

geeze....this is getting eerie! I just this minute remembered I hadn't given you this link for Mike Lin's StartUpControl Panel! Super program to control auto starts, easy to use to stop OR start an auto start for programs. Download and install and then you will find it in your Control Panel.

After 343 posts, we're basically the same person!

If I knew what it meant in people language, I wouldn't've needed the program to get me through the class

And I'm posting this from the NO LONGER BROKEN COMPUTER. The keyboard feels so WEIRD.

Well worth it, if you ask me

I actually already had Mike Lin's thing installed from hundreds of posts ago... I just forgot!

Now I am not a "hardware" person but everything I could find concerning your "unable to initialize the ASPI manager" pointed to ForceASPI

Are you in Louisville by the way?

    ForceASPI it is, then!

I got the uninstalling issues worked out, too; Microsoft told me a couple of registry edits which I got around by putting msiexec.exe into a different folder, and it was all taken care of. Now that I did that, and CAN uninstall the Java 5v2 I have on my computer, should I do that? The Java 6v1 update isn't working right, and I'm wondering if it's because 5v2 is still on my computer. It's giving me the "You must reload the webpage" error even though I have no webpage open because I did the offline install.

In Firefox, every time I try to download something, it now tells me it can't find Norton. Well, good, because Norton's not there, but bad because that's going to get real annoying. I know there's somewhere in Firefox where I SET this option in the first place, and I want to reroute it to AVG, but.. I can't remember where, and I can't find it in the options.

    Nope, I'm in Illinois.

Never mind! The msiexec.exe appears to have fixed the Java problem, too.

And I found the setting in Firefox; it was in a plug-in.

I think this might be the end - or at least pretty nearly so - so once again I want to say thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you. A million times thank you, to PP, SPD, and especially Judy for dogged persecution of these nasty files. You're the heroes of the web

And we made it in under 350, and before my 200th!

I am thrilled and saddened too that our quest is at an end. You have learned so much here don't be a stranger...we need help here for sure. Much of the time I am "it". Not complaining but sometimes I am stretched to the bare bones.
    Some reminders;
Use your AVG Free for regular scheduled scans and updates...yes you are.
    Use a firewall...yes you are.
    Regularly scan with AVG Anti-spy.
    Keep the java updated
Keep your SpywareBlaster updated and everything enabled.
Watch where you surf and KNOW what you download.
Use ATF regularly...like weekly or so.
Use DiskCleanup regularly too. Sit back and have a blue margarita on me!
    Judy
