This may also be redundant...but have you tried Add New Hardware and gone through those steps?

Don't you feel like a little kid in first grade trying to find the cafeteria the first day of school?
LOL... I think finding the cafeteria would be a step up! I hadn't done Add New Hardware because it was showing up, just "broken"... but I'll try it now.
Nope, Add New Hardware ultimately gets me to the same windows and same place as the other routes.. the "cannot load the device driver" error. (In case you have somewhere that addresses these things, it's listed as Code 39).
Another question, I think, would be.... if I finally give up and say the heck with it and format, would the drives come back? :-X
My answer....you want an honest answer...I haven't a clue! I know that doesn't help...there WERE so many nasty things on the computer I suppose it is possible that one of them decided to eat the drivers, I really don't feel the removals would have removed the drivers. I don't feel either that the registry fixes would have done so either. But at this point I am having a hard time remembering we are working on an air conditioning unit too!I suppose my question is... are we probably dealing with residual viruses/trojans/etc? Is this a side effect of the fixes we went through? Is this something entirely other?![]()
Try this....go to the Device Manager.
Open one of these dumb drives. Click the Driver Tab.
Then choose Update the Driver
The Hardware Wizard should open.
Choose Install from a List of Specific Location
Next.
Then you should be given the option of choosing WHERE to get this driver from. Put the path to that file in there.
eMachines tech support may have solved the ODD problem (and how convenient that that's the acronym, too).... update in a minute..
What you just suggested is how I did it... but no luck. eMachines wants me to reset the drivers for the ODDs and the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, then go into the registry and remove two values deep in one of the folders - upperfilters and lowerfilters. Rebooting now to see if this worked.
EDIT: Success!! I seem to have optical drives again!

*screams* Or not! I had them, ever so briefly, and now they're gone again. Definitely something in the way. Back to eMachines
You're going to love this (he said sarcastically). I tried to plug the ethernet cord in because eMachines wanted me to, and... no internet connection.
