XP not working after Ram install

Hi everyone, I recently installed a 1gb ram chip which I purchased recently....

After installing the chip I loaded up my computer, but the windows XP loading screen was different than what normally is, I took a picture of it.


After about 5 seconds of that pixelated progress bar the computer freezes all together.

I removed the RAM I recently installed only to have the same problem. The BIOS setup utility loads up fine and gives me accurate information on my system, so I don't think the graphics card is damaged.

My tech support skills are limited so if you require further information on my system to make an educated analysis, would you first please be so kind as to tell me where and how to find it.

I'm really at a loss for whats wrong, any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Condor, are you absolutely certain that your system would take a 1gb ram chip? Give us the "particulars" of the system.

yes my system can take up to 4078mb. Even so, why would the problem persist even after the ram was removed?

Did you replace the old RAM? Are you certain it snapped in tight? I only ask that because I added RAM to a machine last week and "thought" it had snapped in tight only to find that it had not. Are you certain you purchased the correct type of RAM?
Give us the "make and model" of the computer. Have you actually checked the graphics card? It could need a new driver.

it's a custom built PC, Pentium 4 (R), so there is no "make and model"

and yes the ram was snapped in tight....and then I removed it when widnows stopped working.

Listen to what I'm saying the ram was removed, this is no longer a RAM problem, windows is no longer working.

I did not replace the old ram, only one of the ram chips is still in ther and it's a 256mb pc 3200.

I would like to be able to check my graphics card but as I said I cannot load up windows.

No problem, it's been plaguing me too, I'm thinking XP is corrupted in some way, but why would it happen during a simple RAM upgrade.

I just can't figure it out.

This was all I was able to pull from the BIOS Setup utility

Other than that, I don't know what else you need or how to find it.

Ok...no offense taken...sorry. Know how frustrating this can be...can you boot to safe mode?

Using the F8 Method

1. Restart your computer.
2. When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine, amount of memory, hard drives installed etc. At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Windows XP Advanced Options menu.
3. Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys.
4. Then press enter on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode.

it boots in safe mode but the whole screen looks a lot like the glitchy progress bar pictured above.

It's impossible to see exactly whats happening, but it does load up, just almost impossible to see what it is your looking at.

Yes it's very frustrating, sorry if I came off a little snippy, I thought this RAM might cure a lot of my computer woes but it's caused my whole system to go down.
