Cant access windows updates or sign into messengers

I have a laptop on a wireless connection that runs on windows 2000 prof. My main pc that i access the internet from runs xp and my internet provider is virgin broadband. I have recently found i cannot access quite a few sites on the laptop although I can access them on the main pc. Sites i cant access include windows update and all microsoft sites, msn, yahoo and quite a few other random sites i cant remeber off hand. Most other sites load fine. I also cant sign into any of my instant messenger programs like windows live messenger, yahoo messenger and aim. I dont know if this is a network problem, spyware/trogen problem or the fact that i recently updated IE to version 6. I have looked at my log in HJT and done all usual spyware/virus searches. Can anyone help its driving me mad i have spent all day trying to figure this out!!!!

    Hi Rhonda,

Often these sorts of connection problems are due to your security settings.
You ought to look at your IE security settings as well as your firewall and Net Nanny, etc. . . .

At very quick glance, your HJT Log looks OK - I really didn't have time for an "in depth" look at it. Hang in there until Judy can have a look - She'll be able to advise you further.

I just wanted to pop in quickly and say that this likely isn't malware - rather more likely to be related to security settings and you might want to look there while waiting for Judy's input.

    Best Luck
    PP

Thanks for the quick reply. I have already tried disabling Netnanny and both firewalls on the laptop and main pc. I have looked in security settings in IE and cant see anything wrong that is obvious. Still with all disabled cant get onto some sites or log into instant messengers.

    Hi Rhonda,
You said disabling firewalls...you DO have only one running on the laptop, correct?
I am like PP I don't really see anything on the HJT log which would indicate a problem. Has all this begun to happen only since the IE update?

Yes i just have 1 firewall on laptop and 1 on main pc. As for other question i did lots of stuff to laptop lately so im not sure but i think it may have been since the upgrade. For ages i couldnt upgrade to IE 6 as it said on laptop it had not finished a previous instalation, I managed to sort that after ages and trying loads of things but now this has happened since i managed the upgrade.

Really sounds to me like the Net Nanny may be the culprit, though I am not actually certain since I am not familiar with the program.
Have you checked the Restricted Sites on your Internet Explorer, your firewall and also the Net Nanny to be sure that these are not being blocked by these programs?
I see you are logged on as administrator, are there other user accounts on the computer and if so, can you log onto the computer with one of the other user names and access these pages?

Your router software may be blocking access. To find out if your router is causing the problem, unplug the network cable that runs from your cable modem to the router, and plug it directly into the network (ethernet) jack on your computer -- temporarily cutting the router out of the loop. If that solves the problem, check your router's manual to see if it can block or unblock certain ports. It's unlikely, but it may be configured to block port 443, which is used to make secure connections.

Your java is out of date is one thing I notice, though doubt that would cause this. But you should go to
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp and download the offline installation for the java and save it to your desktop.
Then go to Add/Remove and uninstall all java programs listed there.
Once you have done that then install the new download.
    Then go to this link to verify installation;
    http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp
