    Ok I'm stumped... HELP!!!

I have a customer that has a problem that has totally stumped me...

OK the computer is a HP Pavilion a1600n running media center. It stopped being able to open web pages or ping anywhere after a storm. The dsl modem has been replaced as well as the filters. This computer can connect anywhere else but home. I can connect using my laptop with no problems...

I've reinstalled XP and even put a new nic... no luck...

The phone co says it's the computer.

But the computer connects everywhere else....

I can connect at the house using the same equipment as the HP.

The computer can get online at another house that uses the same provider...

I have done everything I can think of trying to get this thing to work but as soon as I hook it up it's a no go with internet.

I can get a ip address but can't do anything else.

    Any suggestions?

Sounds like hardware issue since you re-installed XP it should not be software based. I was kinda thinking the NIC was hosed or its MAC was somehow being blocked but you mentioned installing and trying with a new NIC and still no go...this doesnt make much sense.

Well, this is a wired connection right? The HP connects to the router which connects to the cable/DSL modem, right?
Can the computer connect to the internet if you bypass the router?
Can you ping the router/gateway from this PC?

ensure every little thing is set correctly with that machine, probly is but then make sure every other little thing is turned off, fast user switching, remote registry, remote desktop, server, netbios, etc. etc.. using one of the online guides to "secure" windows xp these guides are commonly known as BYGO. "Before You Go Online" do your netstat -ano and make sure com services isn't listening on ports via svchost or some other kernel service. Close em all, all you want is TCP/IP no wins, automatic, no wol, throughput, etc.. no netbios, no netbuoi? once you are closed down, and can go online elsewhere Call shenanigans on the ISP untill they come clean..

Ok, Finally got it fixed... It was the ISP! They had her ip address messed up so it basically routed her box to nowhere... Now explain why her box would not work but my laptop would? Would it be a different mac address generated a good ip but hers got a bad one?

    Thanks for the help guys!

Sounds like they were using MAC filters on that particular modems config.

What a crappy service!! If there is a "Mac Address Cloning" option on the router, it could confirm what Cauz said.
