help with popups

I am a computer novice using an IBM Vista PC with Windows XP. I use Firefox although IE is also on my desktop. About a week ago I began receiving a lot of popups. My XP firewall is on, my Firefox and IE pop up blockers are on, I have checked the IE Active X Security Settings and they are as you recommend. I run CCleaner frequently, and everytime I run Spy Sweeper, it identifies threats that I quarantine. On the popups, the blue bar at the top usually include the words Internet Explorer. These are really a pain. Any help is sincerely appreciated. Thanks

Hi George,

Please have a look at the link below and follow the steps to obtain a HijackThis Scanlog, a Kaspersky Online Scanlog and an AVG Anti-Spyware Scanlog and please submit them for us.

-- Be sure to rename HijackThis.exe as outlined in the link. These popups may be a variant of VUNDO and this baddie hides from HJT unless you rename the executable.

ATTENTION: Read Me Before Posting For Help!!

I am not avaialble too often these days, so please hang in there until Judy can have a look at the logs.

Thanks for responding. I apologize for not reading and implementing the "Read this first" section. I completed the process and, so far, the popups are gone. I have Adaware, Spybot, and Norton System works on my computer. If everything stays ok, should I leave AVG, Kaspersky, Defender, and ATF on my computer.

Leaving those programs is up to you. I like AVG Anti-spy and I suggest you keep that. Even after the trial runs out and the "real-time" protection is disabled, you can still internet update its malware definitions and run scans with it "on demand" if you think you have malware.

Also, Windows Defender offers decent "real time" protection and might be preferable to Ad-aware. Again, up to you.

Definitely keep ATF Cleaner and use it regularly!

Do please post those logs, sometimes when you think the nasties are gone they are just "hiding out" until they can come back in there again.
