When did you have Norton/Symantec on the system? It has not been fully removed, meaning you have two anti virus programs on the machine, a big no-no, so how did you remove it?

We had Norton on this computer over a year ago; maybe two or three. Since then we've used Avira and Avast, but never more than one antivirus at a time. I'm not sure how I removed Norton. I think I hit uninstall, but I remember reading somewhere that it's a difficult program to remove entirely. I opened Add or Remove Programs just now and it doesn't have anything under Norton or Symantec except "Symantec Technical Support Controls." Should I go ahead and remove that?
Yes, remove that but I would also advise that you also run this removal tool from Symantec/Norton. You're going to have to figure out which one you had and download the correct tool.

Once you've done that post back and I will give you another tool to run.
Please download ComboFix by sUBs from
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/down...virus/combofix
Please note that the BleepingComputer.com download link will expire in 10 minutes after you click it so if you don’t click within ten minutes after reaching the page you will need to refresh the page.
- You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
- Physically disconnect from the internet.
- Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.
- Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
- When ComboFix has finished running, you will see a screen stating that it is preparing the log report
- This can take a while, so please be patient. If you see your Windows desktop disappear, do not worry. This is normal and ComboFix will restore your desktop before it is finished. Eventually you will see a new screen that states the program is almost finished and telling you the programs log file, or report, will be located at C:\ComboFix.txt.
- Re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix..
Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
Run Combofix ONCE only!!
F.Y.I. Will be offline for 24 hours as I am heading out on vacation. Post your log is really all I can tell you until I am able to come back and take a look.
I hope you enjoyed your vacation!
Unfortunately, I haven't been able to figure out what version of Norton I had. I know we had 2003 at one point, but I think we got a different version later. It says on the site that I should back up the ACT! or WinFAX databases if we use them. I don't know if ACT! or WinFAX is used on this computer, so I was afraid to use any of the removal tools.
