Cannot open Internet Explorer

I have an older Dell running XP which I recently brought home from work.
I know the computer is old, and I'm not expecting to to run lightning fast, just to some light browsing.
Anyway, the computer works just fine using Firefox, but when I try to open IE an error message pops up immediatly and asks if I want to send information to microsoft. I tried to download IE8...went through all the motions, but still does the same thing?
What to do?
