    IE7 Issues(Resolved)

Hi IANAG -- All of a sudden we've started having issues with IE7 on our laptop. We use XP/SP2.

We can't get yahoo mail to load (it hangs on the "Logging into Yahoo Mail" page). Also, when I try & login to eBay, it says "If you are seeing this page, your browser settings prevent you from automatically redirecting to a new URL. Please click here to continue."

I have done everything I can think of including downloading a fresh copy if IE7, but nothing seems to work.

I've included a copy of my HJT log. The one thing that is highlighted in red (ctfmon.exe) when I use the parse tool seems to be an OK file from microsoft???

    Thanks for your help.

    Katie

You have an extraordinary number of programs running in the background. I also see SpyHunter on the program which is a program of somewhat dubious nature and really mediocre at best in removing and protecting against spyware. I would uninstall that one, completely.
Did you run all the steps here? If not then please do and then post back with a new HJT log and by the way, don't use the parse tool. Just run the scans and place the logs here for reading.

Ok, I followed what directions I could...some things wouldn't work.

I couldn't do step 7 (running Kaspersky) -- I believe for the same reason that IE7 isn't working on other sites. It seems like some dynamic content doesn't work (for instance, when I look at my comcast email via their web client, I can compose, but when I click "send", nothing happens).

When I booted in safe mode, I couldn't find the ATF-Cleaner. I did all the other steps in safemode. On all the scans, I only had a few medium level threats.

I'm not sure my issue is a spyware issue...I think it has something to do with settings that inadvertently got changed??

Regardless, you were right; I do seem to have an extraoridnary number of processes running in the background. I know I can go to the task manager & end the process, but how can I get them to not start in the first place?

Thanks again for all your help.

    Cheers,
    Katie

You show Firefox in some of your log listings, great browser! But which one do you have listed as your default browser, IE7 or Firefox?
Have you tried rolling back to IE6? This might be something to think about, so many are having problems with IE7 that this is an option.

I have IE7 as my default.

I'd be happy to roll back to IE6, but can't figure out how to do that! I can't get system restore to work, nothing. I'm SO aggravated! I've wasted a FULL day on this!

There are glitches everywhere. When I load a webpage, & ctrl+f to try and find a word, I can type in the box but can't hit enter (it's like it doesn't realize there is a value in the input box).

    How to Uninstall IE7:
    • 1. Go to Control Panel
      2. Click Add or Remove Programs
      3. Click Show Updates checkbox
      4. Click whatever version of IE7 you have. For example "Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 Preview"
      5. Click the Change/Remove button
After you uninstall Internet Explorer 7, double-click the Internet Explorer icon to verify that Internet Explorer 6 is restored

I TOO use Firefox. It is my default browser. I only use IE6 to download any updates which require using IE6, these generally are just the Windows updates.

I'm a dummy...I figured out how to uninstall it & am back to IE6. The problem persists, however.

Here's another example of the problem -- when I login here to IANAG, after putting in my user name & password, I get the "Thank you for logging in" page. But it never moves off of that page, so I have to click on the link that says "Click here if your browser does not automatically forward you."

So frustrating. Oh, I can't click on the smilies over --> there. Nothing happens.

Have you updated your Java lately? current version is 6.1
When you sign in here do you check box which says "remember me"? If you do that you should have to keep signing in.
Use ONLY Firefox and set it as your DEFAULT browser and see if you keep having these problems. Firefox has the option of always remembering user name and password for various websites if you wish to use it.
Let me know if any of this makes a difference.
To control Start Ups use Mike Lin's StartUp Control Panel. It is FREE, small and very easy to use.

Yeah, my Java is updated, although I'm now thinking it's an issue w/Java.

I can't use the search function on my computer. I can't open the system restore window.

    Verify System Restore is active
Verify System Restore is active using the steps below:

1.Click Start, Control Panel, and then double-click the Administrative Tools icon.
2.Double-click the Computer Management icon. The Computer Management window opens.
3.Click the plus ( +) next to Services and Applications in the left window, and then click Services.
4.Double-click System Restore Services in the right window. The System Restore Service Properties window opens.
5.Verify Startup type is set to Automatic and that Service status is started.
*If Startup type is not set to Automatic, click the down arrow and select Automatic.
    6.Click Apply and then OK.
7.If Windows prompts you to restart the PC, click Yes
    .
    Why doesn't Search work?
Open Explorer and go to the Windows\inf folder. Locate the srchasst.inf file. Right click it and select Install. You'll need your XP CD or the files from the i386 folder. (This fix will require you to have your Win XP CD).

The Windows\inf folder is a hidden folder. You can adjust your Explorer Folder Options (View tab) to Show hidden files and folders. You can also click Start, Run and enter %SystemRoot%\inf to open directly to the inf folder.
