It is a "Professional" social network. For example if your a corporate
Product Director you can be a member of a sub-group of Product Directors who
    share common experices.

    What Dave Lipman said.
LinkedIn isn't necessarily limited to people of the same inclinations
<grin>. I'm on LinkedIn, because despite being retired, some of my
former colleagues and general friends are on it as well and it makes it a
little easier to stay in contact. It's more legit than Facebook, I
    think.

Apparently, your email address is in "Dave's" address book. When one
signs up for LinkedIn, it tries to steal all the email addresses from
you. If you clicked that link, expect a continuous onslaught of email
from LinkedIn from now until you die.

The only way you can refuse the mail is to *join*!!

Unlike the pervasive mass of peuriles, rabble, ignorants, and public
self-stroking egotists that infect Facebook and other moronic social
networking sites, LinkedIn is for professionals. I don't belong there
so I cannot attest that they are always professional but their "groups"
look to be like moderated forums. They have a list of their groups at:

    http://www.linkedin.com/directory/groups/

I'd suspect and expect because it is considered a professional community
that someone spamming, scamming, or phishing would get kicked off along
with peuriles, malcontents, trolls, imposters, and other undesirables
that afflict Usenet, especially since other group users can issue
    reports regarding content violations.

    Policies:
    http://www.linkedin.com/static?key=u...k=hb_ft_userag
    See section 2.

Besides the moderated forums, they have other services, like job
searching, and even have services for job recruiters looking for
qualifying professionals. I don't what is their qualification to be
classed a "professional" but they do have a long skills directory at
    http://www.linkedin.com/skills/directory. I don't know if you can
upload your resume there but they do let your define your profile and I
see in their help articles about importing your resume.

It really doesn't take much time wandering around linkedin.com to figure
out what it is. Go there and look. Besides reading the wiki article
and their About Us page, you could read their online help to get an idea
    of what they offer (http://help.linkedin.com/app/topics).

Just remember what you put in your public profile is available for any
other member to see. Someone that is a linkedin member can tell you if
you can secrete some of your profile info so you can decide who sees
what. The point is you want to share your profile with other
professionals but you can't guarantee the intent for use of your profile
info by all other members. I'm sure as with any forum, social network,
or anywhere else that you define a public profile that there are the
nasties that are there only to harvest that information.

You needn't worry, no one gives a FF about you.

Now that you know what it is, if you decide to participate be VERY
careful to who you allow joining 'your' network. Since it is filled
with professionals, you don't want to invite someone you don't know
to see your contacts. Nothing will ruin your reputation faster than
allowing some jerk to get your hard-earned contact's information and
    re posting them.

Mine has CEO's and other high ranking executives at certain
companies. If I willy-nilly 'accept' someone I don't know, they can
access my contacts. You could see where that may be disastrous.

Oh my god, I've been rebuked by a puerile unable to qualify for
membership in any moderated professional group so he is left to drool
his poison here in Usenet. Oh dear me, how shall I survive this ever so
devastating lambaste to my presumed thin-skinned ego.

    I'm melting, I'm melting. What a world, what a world. Who would've
thought a dullard like you could destroy my beautiful wickedness. Oh
no, oh no, I'm going, oh-h-h-h.

Which professional groups do you proclaim to be a member of? As for thin
skinned ego, I've never accused you of that. Quite the opposite. Arrogant,
    thick skinned.

Sad you feel the need to provide a url for one of the most well known ehh,
moving pictures quotes. For someone to be unfamiliar with that paragraph,
they don't read/write yet OR they've been living under a rock.

You have extreme illusions of grander, You should get that checked.
