You'd be wrong; linkedin attempts to send mail to everyone in your
addressbook and never stops. I'm not a member (and don't intend to be),
but I finally forwarded anything from them do Dave Null. What he does with
    it, I don't know.

Lurkers aren't going to get reported, are they? Or are you saying that
LinkedIn themselves are distributing spam to those you've added to your
address book there? Their [non-]privacy policy certainly appears to say
they will distribute your contact info to third parties:

    http://www.linkedin.com/static?key=privacy_policy says "We use the
information you provide to: ... your personal details to third parties
offering combined services with LinkedIn" and "Send you service or
promotional communications through email" (although they claim you can
configure these in your preferences options). Yet they declare "We do
not sell, rent, or otherwise provide personally identifiable information
to third parties without your consent".

According to G. Morgan's reply, you decide who becomes part of your
personal network (and those folks apparently get your contacts). They
say "We also provide you with the means to control whether or not your
contact information is viewable to other Users through your profile."

Seems like a good test is to sign up with a special-use account only for
use with LinkedIn and then monitor for where any e-mails originate.

I have no intention of getting involved in it. What threw me was the spammy
nature of the email from someone I've never heard of. I have all kinds of
alias email addresses but I don't give my main email address to anybody.
This one came to my main address. If I get spammed at any of the others, I
    just delete the alias.

I did Google for LinkedIn but I got a better idea what it really is through
the replies I got here. Thanks to all of you! Not counting the troll(s), of
    course... :-)

Like all social networks, you have to manage it. Don't let it scan your
addressbook, unless you have a separate one for real, professional
contacts. And don't accept just anyone who asks to connect. It's as
simple as that. A good aspect is that people you do want to keep up with
professionally (and who update their info carefully) are "available".
Such as people who might ask you for a reference, who move to another
place of employment, fill it in.

The problem with linkedin is that it will continue to send you requests
even after you have clicked the "don't email me" link. In my world, that's
    not a social network; it's a spammer.
