That's why you need something resident to keep changes being made to
startup items and HOSTS file. I've used Winpatrol for many years for
this.

when you choose to download a Hosts file? I mean a forensic-type check
after downloading onto a known clean machine (a new or wiped HD should
be OK! <smile>) I'll bet not!

I know I'm dopey sometimes, but I understood that malware *can* be
downloaded *in conjunction* with a plain text file.

Indeed, just *visiting* a URL can infect a computer - can't it?!!
