Someone hacked my email and it has now sent out emails to everyone in my
contact list.
1) How can I fix this?
2) How can I prevent it from happening again?

Login using the webmail interface to your account and change your login
credentials. Then go change your personal info, too, since that's used
by the "Forgot Password" scheme.
Make sure you use a STRONG password next time.

Was it just an email hack, or did malware on your system snarf your id/pw.
You will need to get rid of the malware before doing anything else if
you plan to keep using Micro$oft.

Make sure you have the latest Thunderbird installed.
Change your email password, assuming you have no malware on your system.

Latest statistics I saw was over 7,000 new malware programs created daily.
That would indicate you have very little chance of preventing it from
happening again with your Micro$oft OS.
Two options,
1. install VirtualBox then a Linux distribution as a guest
and for any Internet work requiring a password, boot the Linux guest
and work from there.
2. Install a Linux OS as a second OS and just boot into Linux.
Only time I have to run Micro$not is when I want to use Turbo Tax from cd.

I can recommend the Mandriva One iso for your Live cd.

If you chose Mandriva, you will find a pretty nice bunch of people in
the Usenet group alt.os.linux.mandriva

I have been using Microsoft Windows and many Microsoft products since
Windows 2 but never had any form of malware on any of my PC's. Perhaps
I am doing something wrong!

About as accurate as those who think Microsoft is the answer to
everything. I've been running Microsoft OS' since DOS days and I haven't
had any infections here. Nor is Linux a good option for a lot of people
out there. IMHO - the truth is that Linux is a good solution for a few,
Microsoft is a good solution for many, but the majority of users today
will have problems of one sort or another with either of them. At least
if they are running Windows they will be able to get help from a LOT
more people since the knowledgeable Linux people are _far_ fewer in number.
For what it's worth, I use VirtualBox on this Windows machine to run a
couple of Linux distros infrequently. I also use Windows VirtualPC to
run several other Microsoft OS'. Beats the heck out of using a
multi-boot machine in that I don't have to keep shutting down and
rebooting just to provide some phone support on a different OS.
