    W32.Spybot.worm - what is it?

In running a scan today, my Norton software told me a had a virus worm called W32.Spybot.worm and it was unable to quarentine it. I ran a scan with my other tools (the ones you always recommend) and they don't find a problem. My log is below and it doesn't show any major issues either.
My sysem is running a bit slow, on a scale from 1-10 (10 being so slow that my system is useless), I would rate it a 4.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi Joan,

I imagine Judy will check your thread and offer some advice as soon as she is able. In the meantime, please do the following:

    FIRST:
You should definitely Update your Java here ---> http://www.java.com/en
-Then, look in Add/Remove Programs and Remove ALL traces of all older Java versions! If you do not uninstall ALL older versions, you may remain at risk for a number of baddies such as Vundo.

    THEN:

--- Download ATF-Cleaner.exe by Atribune to your Desktop.
-- Click on ATF-Cleaner to run it
-- Where it says Select Files To Delete, Check the Select All Option
-- Click Empty Selected > OK > EXIT
This will flush the Java Cache, among other things.

-- Also, please go here ---> http://virusscan.jotti.org/ and use the Browse Button at the top of the page to navigate to C:\WINDOWS\system32\nig24.dll and Upload it for analysis. Please Copy&Paste the results along with a fresh HJT Log when you post back. I am not familiar with that dll - it may not be a baddie. Jotti will give us more info.

    I think the W32.Spybot is a P2P worm --> Old Symantec Writeup

Hang in there for Judy to weigh in.....

    PP

Thanks for the help. As you instructed I downloaded the new update for Java and removed the old program. Also downloaded the ATF cleaner and ran it.

I couldn't find the nig24.dll file in the system folder and I did a search that turned up nothing. I've been running more scans from other programs, so maybe one of them found this file and deleted it. Anyway, here is my new HJT log.

    Hi Joan,

Interestingly enough, that new Java update is not the latest version . . . It is odd. The current version is Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 8. I wonder why they reverted back to Update 6? I updated a couple days ago at the same site and got Update 8 . . .

At any rate, be advised that the current Update is 8 and you can get that here-->J2SE(TM) Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 8
You may wish to wait a few days and see how things shake out - Just remember to do it

As for C:\WINDOWS\system32\nig24.dll, it is still showing in your HJT log. I do not know what it is, but it could well be a baddie. Try looking for it again and make sure that you have enabled the viewing of hidden files.
I am a little hesitant to try to delete it without knowing what it is . . . . .

-- Can you run a scan with your Spy Sweeper and attach the log? Make sure it is up to date with its definitions first.
-- Also, can you copy the log from SpyBot showing the initial problem? I'd like a look at that, too.

nig24.dll is the only thing that really jumps out at me as a possible problem. Of course, there are a number of things that HJT does not see and we can look further if need be. For now, just do tha above and we'll go from there.

    * I see Judy has checked in - I'll get out of the way now

Thanks PP for jumping in here.
Joan, what I would like you to do is update your Norton.

Then go to PP's sticky READ ME Before Posting A Request For Assistance!

If you have not done so yet, I would like you to download CCleaner from the link given in his thread. Don't run it yet.

Read his instructions for Enabling Hidden Files and Folders and then do this. Familiarize yourself with the instructions for Booting to Safe Mode.

I would like you also to UPDATE your Ewido program.

Also I would like you to read PP's instructions on placing HJT in it's own folder. It must be run from it's own folder in order to have a place for backup files in case fixes done with HJT need to be restored.

Now disconnect completely from the internet...that means unplug from the computer. Reboot the computer in SAFE MODE.
Once the computer is in Safe Mode then run CCleaner. Use only the Default Scan and remove all your temp files.

Next run your Norton Program and do a FULL SYSTEM scan. Remove everything found. Make noted of anything which cannot be fixed, FULL NAME and LOCATION of whatever Norton cannot remove.

Next run your Ewido Scan...again a FULL SYSTEM scan. Do a Complete System Scan and allow it to fix whatever is found. Be sure to click on Save Report. We will need that in your next post.

Once you have run these three programs then reboot to Normal Mode and run a new HJT scan and save the log. Post that new log and the Ewido log here when you have completed these steps.
    Judy
