I'm going to give you a simple demonstration.....

the first url will load a page, and nothing more. You would have to
click the "download here" button to get BugHunter.

http://bughunter.it-mate.co.uk

this url will cause your computer to ask (if you have it selected) or
just download my bughunter. No "click here to download".

http://bughunter.it-mate.co.uk/BUGHUN22.ZIP


This happens to be a .ZIP file, but it could be an exe/pdf/doc/mp3,
whatever I want. It's a direct link; so your computer isn't going to
request you to click more webpages to get it!

Do you understand whats going on with the ms link now, BD?

If I knew *how* to check the file for authenticity, I would do so. I'm
here asking (no, grovelling!) for help/advice from you or others who may
know how to do so. If you don't wish to help, that's fine but you surely
could point me in the right direction, couldn't you?

Did you take it? If you did, you will have noticed how easy it is to
spoof (copy) the *real McCoy*. All I wish to establish is that the SP3
file posted - for no apparent reason - in the 24hsh group is *real* and
is of no danger to anyone.

This is the proper page to *obtain* the download:

Once one presses the download button, one is whisked away to here

You will note that it's the same at the original SP3 link in 24hsh

So far, so good - but *who* pushed a *download button* to effect the
actual download and *why* was the link posted in the newsgroup?

My motives are genuine. I simply don't like 'bad guys'! ;-)

YOU don't need to check the file, it's coming from the ms site. They
aren't in the habit of serving malware in windows updates.

If that doesn't satisfy you, you can download the file and check it's
hash/digital signature.

Either page works, in fact, the first link only takes you to the second
link anyway.

Which is a direct link.. of sorts. for the purposes of this, you may
consider it a direct link.

If I ever see www.microsoft.com or, say, www.google.com on my computer
screen, are you are telling me, categorically, that I will *always* end
up at the *genuine* Microsoft or Google web site if I click on the link?

For the 3rd time. That Portuguese XP SP3 link posted to the 24hr is an authentic
link from Microsoft. Why the OP posted it ,is only known to him. Same with you when
you post a stupid link ,it is only known to you why you did.

No, really.. I don't know why they didn't post the first link instead.
I suppose to save the user from having to click "Download me!". Either
way, the links are fine. They are going for the same thing. The second
link saves you the trouble of having to click download me.

I have a suggestion for you, BD. seriously. I've read the book myself a
couple of times because the cartoon sidelines are so frakkin funny! The
complete idiots guide to HTML. If you read that book, you'd learn alot
about how the world wide web and a little about the internet too! and
save alot of us (including yourself) some time.
