I discussed your predicament with your motorcycle in detail with Mrs BD
earlier today (yesterday, now!) - but failed to come and tell you what
we'd said! So sorry about that.

I'm quite sure you could tackle your bike problems yourself if you did
but try. There is much expertise lurking in this SE group should you
need advice on what to do to fix it! Better than asking on the 24hr
helpdesk I'm sure!

I am no stranger to the internal combustion engine myself, and as it
happens I have been getting more time off from work for such activity.

Motorcycle and automotive maintenance and repair was a former hobby of
mine.

My son is a real hobbiest when it comes to all of that stuff, too. There
isn't a car he's ever had that he didn't take it apart and put it together
again under 5 times a piece. There always seems to be a part he wants to
replace with an upgrade part ... add bells and whistles to it ... raise it
or lower it ... get new wheels or swap parts with buddies. He went to an
auction once and bought a car for $100 and fixed it up and sold it for like
$1000. <shrugs> I just want a car I can put the key in and it'll start
every time, has good AC and Heat and is safe to drive. The last thing I
want is to put it in the shop to mess with it. If it works.. there isn't
anything else to fix! leave it alone LOL ... not him ... he's got to be
messing with his cars every chance he gets... lol

On occasion. As the radio is busted in my van; it's not often. I have
an mp3 player wired up to external speakers; but I keep the volume real
low so I can listen for engine/transmission noises.

You won't find statistics that say average drivers who do listen to
music cause nearly as many fatalities as that of a drunk or cell phone
using driver.

... cause NEARLY as many?? Are you saying that causing any accidents from
listening to music is acceptable?

My wife turns the radio volume UP so she can't hear odd noises!

BTW - have you decided what kind of vehicle you are going to get to
replace your old van when you become rich very shortly?

As part of the education of my children, my boys were each required (by
me!) to strip down a basic car engine (one had a Ford Escort and the
other a Vauxhall Cavalier (GM)) replace the cylinder-head gasket and
deal with all the other things associated with a top end overhaul. My
dad had made me do it, so I carried on the trend!

My daughter, some years younger, didn't take a lot of notice at the time
but when she got to 17 and I bought her a cheap Ford Fiesta ....... she
insisted that I taught *her* how to do a top end overhaul too! She
worked well and enjoyed the experience!

Although I still do all the maintenance on my boat engine, rarely do I
raise the bonnet of my car! ;-)
