Thread: [ROOTKIT INFECTION] PUP.BitMiner: kwrd.dll

  1. #91
I figured as much. I wasn't really planning on it, just throwing it out there as a last ditch option. I'll get back to you after I get home later tonight. I'll try to check in later with an estimate of when that might be.

Any time is fine. I check in here all the time. I "think" that we can get this all wrapped up shortly, "may" have also found a way to get rid of those left over, corrupted McAfee files. But this has all been pretty much "shots in the dark" until I found this new info today so hopefully it will all be cleaned up. Then we can get on with securing this computer.

On my way home now. Apparently we weren't running as many errands as anticipated. Should be back to run the other steps in about ten minutes.

Take your time, do them in order, ignoring of course the combofix uninstall and beginning with that rootkit removal tool from ESET. Any trouble with one, stop and post back.

There aren't any processes listed comprised of a long string of numbers. Everything running looks normal.

    Very good.
Please download OTC by OldTimer and save to your Desktop.
    • Connect to the Internet and double-click on OTC.exe to start the program.
    • Click on the green CleanUp! button.
    • If you get a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTC attempting to contact the Internet, please allow the connection.
    • When it has finished, OTC will ask you to reboot so it can remove itself.

-- Doing this will remove any specialized tools downloaded and used. If OTC does not delete itself, then delete the file manually when done.
-- Any leftover folders/files related to ComboFix which were not remove can be deleted manually (right-click on them and choose delete).

    Report back with the results.

ComboFix and OTC both appear to be gone now.

Ok, let's see if we can get rid of the McAfee stuff.
    Do this again:

    ComboFix by sUBs from

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/down...virus/combofix

Please note that the BleepingComputer.com download link will expire in 10 minutes after you click it so if you don’t click within ten minutes after reaching the page you will need to refresh the page.

    • You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
    • Physically disconnect from the internet.
    • Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.
    • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    • When ComboFix has finished running, you will see a screen stating that it is preparing the log report
    • This can take a while, so please be patient. If you see your Windows desktop disappear, do not worry. This is normal and ComboFix will restore your desktop before it is finished. Eventually you will see a new screen that states the program is almost finished and telling you the programs log file, or report, will be located at C:\ComboFix.txt.
    • Re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix..

    Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

    Run Combofix ONCE only!!

Post back with that new combofix log. If you still have the problem getting combofix to run, of course, change the name again, but try first to run it without the name change.

Open Notepad Go to Start> All Programs> Accessories> Notepad ( this will only work with Notepad ) and copy all the text inside the Codebox by highlighting it all and pressing CTRL C on your keyboard, then paste it into Notepad, make sure there is no space before and above SecCenter::
    SecCenter::

Save this as CFScript to your desktop.

Then disable your security programs and drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe which still should be on the desktop.
This will start ComboFix again. Ignore any warnings about McAfee. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply.
