Top behind is patch panel (can't really see) the top server is the firewall, the switch at the bottom is a fiber switch to interface with the 4 SAN enclosures. Got that stuff free, did not hook it up yet. I ordered a supermicro server so I can plug the fiber card and interface with it. The stuff on top of the switch is my networking stuff (routers, switch) and that hard drive dock is for backups.

Funny thing is, the tower server on the side is basically the most critical part of the setup and is my main home server. Has a bunch of VMs on it as well for various stuff. The SAN is mostly a play toy, wont put anything valuable on it as it is very old and impossible to get parts for. It's an IBM and it requires lot of lube to get parts from them.

I will probably use the SAN for extra backup storage so I can have better retention. Right now most of my backups are just mirrors, I can't go back very far.

This is the server I ordered:

Still waiting on the ram though... it's taking a while. That will basically see all the drives in the SAN (hopefully... never did this before) and from there I can use Openfiler, Freenas etc to create LUNs.

Chew big cables till you hit the hard rich copper center. It's always full of surprises.
